Η αντιμετώπιση των παθήσεων της μιτροειδούς βαλβίδας, έχει γνωρίσει μια πραγματική επανάσταση τα τελευταία χρόνια, χάρη στην ανάπτυξη της ελάχιστα επεμβατικής καρδιοχειρουργικής. Η μιτροειδής βαλβίδα της καρδιάς παίζει καθοριστικό ρόλο στη σωστή κυκλοφορία του αίματος. Όταν παρουσιάζει δυσλειτουργία –όπως ανεπάρκεια ή στένωση– η καρδιά δυσκολεύεται να αντλήσει αποτελεσματικά το αίμα, προκαλώντας συμπτώματα όπως δύσπνοια, κόπωση ή ταχυκαρδίες.
